Abstract
The watershed algorithm is widely recognized for its capability to produce continuous and precise object boundaries, making it useful in various domains such as medical imaging, satellite image analysis, and microscopy. Nevertheless, its high sensitivity to noise and imaging artifacts often leads to excessive segmentation and reduced accuracy. To address this limitation, this paper introduces a hybrid approach called Feature-Integrated Marker Watershed (FIMW), which combines adaptive edge reconstruction with spectral feature-based marker generation. By integrating structural and spectral information, the proposed method produces more stable and accurate markers, effectively reducing over-segmentation while preserving important image details. Experimental evaluations on the BSDS500 dataset show that FIMW decreases the VI metric by 7.8% and improves CV and PRI by 1.4% and 0.7%, respectively. These results confirm that the proposed method enhances boundary detection accuracy, mitigates over-segmentation, and improves overall segmentation quality compared with existing watershed-based techniques.
